ONE BASE · TWO TOWNS
The accommodation is the same,
Just changes the scenery.
We travel from Nagoya to Takayama and stay in the same accommodation for 3 nights. On the first two days, we walk to see the morning market and Edo-era alleys, and on the third day, we take a reserved bus to Shirakawa-go. The beauty of small-town travel is not the number of places, but the time of day. We leave the Sanmachi before the group tourists arrive and the evening after the buses have left.

Shirakawa-go
Three and a half hours is enough.
If you take the bus at 07:50 and return at 14:45, your local stay will be 6 hours, but the actual village walk will take just over 3 hours. The remaining time is for the observatory, lunch, and a buffer for bus delays. If you return to Takayama rather than carrying your suitcase to Kanazawa, your itinerary will be simpler even if it snows or rains.
As of April 2026, the price is ¥2,800 one way. Seat reservations are required for buses marked with reservation system. The observatory shuttle is usually 10:00–14:40, ¥200 cash one way, subject to weather and event days.
MORNING MATTERS
The market opens before noon,
The alley before the stores opened.
Miyagawa Morning Market is open from 07:00 to 12:00 from April to November and from 08:00 to 12:00 from December to March. Buy fruits, pickles and local snacks at the market and walk to Sanmachi at 08:30 Jeon Hue first. After 10 a.m., groups of tourists overlap, so changing the order of photography and shopping is key.
WHERE TO STAY
Two ryokans,
Two cost-effective hotels
Recommendation Conclusion
If your goal is a hot spring experience, go to Honjin Hiranoya right in front of the old town, or for a quiet stay and hot spring water, go to Hanaougi. If you prioritize transportation and cost, a residence right next to the station is the most practical, and if you want a large bath and a restaurant, a hotel around is a good balance. All four locations are alternatives for a three-night stay.

Hidatei Hanaougi

- Japanese-style breakfast and 2 meals included in plan
- Dinner
- Hida beef-centered kaiseki · Pre-designated check-in and meal times
- parking
- Free parking for guests
- Advantages
- You can experience a hot spring ryokan without a car thanks to soft hot spring water from your own source, wooden-centered rooms, and station transfers.
- Cons
- It is inconvenient to walk at night as it is far from the old town, and two meals for three consecutive nights increases the cost and amount of meals.

Honjin Hiranoya Kachoan
Takayama Jinya, right in front of Nakabashi, within walking distance of Sanmachi
- price
- 2 people per room approx. ¥65,000–120,000+ / 1 night, 2 meals included
- breakfast
- Breakfast by Japanese style or plan · Check reservation conditions
- Dinner
- Kaiseki course meal with Hida beef and seasonal ingredients Dinner included Check-in before 18:00 recommended
- parking
- Free parking for hotel guests. Check on-site for valet information.
- Advantages
- DAY 2 Because it is in the middle of the main route, you can enjoy the quiet old town both in the morning and after sunset.
- Cons
- It is better to request a pick-up rather than walking from the station with a suitcase, and prices for higher-end rooms increase significantly.

- price
- 2 people per room approx. ¥14,000–30,000 / 1 night

- Advantages
- All rooms have a kitchen and washer/dryer, so it is most practical for a 3-night stay and is easy to use by the first bus to Shirakawa-go.
- Cons
- There are no hot springs, large public baths, or restaurants, and 17 parking spaces are available on a first-come, first-served basis.

Hotel Around Takayama
Approximately 4 minutes' walk northeast of JR Takayama Station
- price
- 2 people per room approx. ¥16,000–34,000 / 1 night

- Dinner
- Hanaoka Dining & Bar operated · Separate order or two meal plan
- parking
- 44 outdoor spaces in front of the hotel, 24 hours per night, ¥1,500
- Advantages
- It is close to the station, but has a large hot spring bath and a restaurant, so it has a better travel atmosphere than a business hotel.
- Cons
- There is a large difference in space depending on the room type, and if you add breakfast and parking, the total price becomes higher than that of a residence.
Rate criteria · Approximate range of 2 people per room per night searchable in September 2026. For ryokans, breakfast and dinner and room baths vary greatly, and for hotels, the date, breakfast, and cancellation conditions vary greatly. Please double-check the 3-night total and whether meals are included on the reservation screen.
