ARC RECORD · SOUTH KOREA
A palace visit and one manageable wall section.
Add a fortress city without changing your Seoul hotel. Transfer from Suwon Station to Hwaseong Haenggung, have lunch in Haenggung-dong, then walk towards Janganmun, Hwahongmun and Banghwasuryujeong. The plan assumes arrival around 10:00 and an evening return to Seoul. It is not a full wall circuit. Two adults use public transport, walking and occasional buses or taxis; choose street-level sections if steps and slopes are difficult.
A proposed itinerary based on official tourism and property sources, not a firsthand review or live booking quote. Travel times are planning estimates. Suggested visit times are not opening hours. All times are local to South Korea.

Hwaseong Haenggung to the northern gates

G41rn8 / Wikimedia Commons · Resized · CC BY-SA 4.0- 0110:00 Arrive at Suwon Station and transfer to Hwaseong Haenggung. Sightseeing does not start immediately outside the station; allow 30–45 minutes for waiting and local travel.
- 0210:45 Allow 60–90 minutes at the temporary palace. Check open areas and last admission before buying a ticket. Treat any performance as optional until confirmed.
- 0312:15 Lunch and a short break in Haenggung-dong. For galbi, check portion weight, minimum orders and charges for additional rice or noodles.
- 0413:30 Head towards Janganmun. Use lower pedestrian paths if wall steps are difficult. There is no need to complete the entire circuit.
- 0514:15 Explore Hwahongmun and the Banghwasuryujeong–Yongyeon area. Keep off barriers and shorten the walk in poor weather.
- 0615:30 Rest at a Haenggung-dong café or browse a small shop. In heavy rain, replace the wall walk with one exhibition venue confirmed open that day.
- 07Leave for Suwon Station around 16:30. If staying for dinner, check the return connection to your Seoul hotel. Evening palace visits have separate dates, hours and ticket arrangements.
Times are visit targets, not opening hours. Check the actual journey from your hotel instead of assuming every trip starts at Seoul Station. Hwaseong city and Suwon Hwaseong Fortress are different destinations.
PLAN WITH A REASON
Why this route works
The palace and walls have different access rules
The walls are open-format heritage spaces, while the palace and activities have their own admission conditions. Use current visitor notices rather than relying on old fees or evening hours.
Distinguish metro and intercity trains
The best route depends on your starting point. Metropolitan metro travel and reserved intercity trains use different tickets. For a train, verify the actual stop and return booking in KORAIL; for the metro, include the transfer to your hotel.
Keep your Seoul base unless an overnight helps
This is an outing during a Seoul stay. Leave large bags at your base to avoid searching for lockers. If spending the night, compare the station area with Ingye-dong using dinner plans and your next destination.
EAT ALONG THE ROUTE
Food without the detour
12:15 · LUNCH
Lunch in Haenggung-dong
Eat between the palace and northern wall walk. Choose by menu and waiting time rather than travelling across town.
Official information ↗LUNCH OR EARLY DINNER
Optional Suwon galbi
It may exceed the sample meal budget. Check plain versus marinated ribs, portion prices and minimum orders, then replace the meal allocation with your actual order.
Official information ↗OPTION WHEN RETURNING SOUTH
Chicken-street meal
This is not the shortest stop after the northern walls. Add it only if returning towards Paldalmun and check portions and seating.
Official information ↗15:30 · BREAK
Haenggung-dong café
A seated break after walking. Check stairs and rooftop access and consider ground-floor seating.
Official information ↗These are meal options, not confirmed reservations. Check the exact branch, hours, menu and total price before visiting.
WHERE TO STAY
Two hotel options if you extend the trip
The day trip needs no hotel. Consider these only for a later evening or an onward trip the next day. Neither is directly beside the palace, so allow an extra transfer.
OPTIONAL NIGHT · Station area
Novotel Ambassador Suwon
Suwon Station and shopping complex area

BUDGET WORKSHEET
A sample budget per person
The example totals KRW 65,000 per person, excluding Seoul–Suwon transport and accommodation. Add galbi upgrades, paid activities or sightseeing rides separately. Sharing a KRW 140,000 room adds KRW 70,000 per person, before breakfast and the next day’s meals.
KRW means South Korean won. These are illustrative allocations, not rates quoted by the hotels or restaurants above. Flights, shopping, alcohol, massages and extra activities without a separate allocation are excluded. Recalculate with taxes, service charges, breakfast and cancellation conditions from your booking screen.
