PORT TO VOLCANO
A night in the port,
A night on Hot Springs Mountain.
On the first day, leave your luggage at Shinchi, view the port at Glover Garden, and finish with the night view of Mount Inasa. On the second day, we take a leisurely stroll through Peace Park and take just one direct bus to Unzen from Nagasaki Station. In order to comfortably travel between the city by the sea and the mountains filled with sulfur fog within 3 days and 2 nights, we accurately arranged 1 night at a hotel in the city and 1 night at the Unzen ryokan.

Only after check-in
I'm walking through hell.
Unzen Hell is the center of a hot spring village where steam rises from about 30 fumaroles. It is open 24 hours a day but has no lights at night. If you arrive at 14:51, leave your luggage and walk around 15:00, there is still light and it is not too late for dinner at the ryokan. It only takes about 45–60 minutes to connect the boardwalk and the main fumarole.
The visibility and smell of sulfur become stronger depending on the direction of the vapor. If you have asthma or respiratory disease, or on days when control information is issued, avoid going near fumaroles and focus on hot spring villages and foot baths.
DIRECT BUS
easier than train
One direct bus.
Based on the official timetable in April 2026, express buses from Nagasaki Station to Unzen depart at 09:10, 13:10, and 16:10 and take approximately 1 hour and 41 minutes. It costs ¥1,900 one way and is on a first-come, first-served basis without reservation. The app digital round-trip ticket is ¥3,420, cheaper than the regular round-trip ticket of ¥3,800. In this itinerary, if you miss the 13:10 bus, you may struggle to arrive in time for dinner at the ryokan, so allow time for lunch and collecting your luggage.
WHERE TO STAY
Unzen Ryokan Two,
Two downtown hotels
Recommendation Conclusion
On DAY 1, Forza is better if you want southern sightseeing and good restaurants, and JR Kyushu Hotel is better the next day if bus and airport access are your top priorities. For DAY 2, Miyazaki Ryokan is the right choice for bright new rooms and a view of hell, and Fukudaya is the right choice for a wider range of prices and a folk hot spring atmosphere. Choose one downtown and one in Unzen.
