Krabi in 4 days: Ao Nang, Railay and a town morning

8 SEPTEMBER 20263 NIGHTS · 4 DAYS

ARC RECORD · THAILAND

Keep your base in Ao Nang and take the boat when conditions allow.

This route is for travellers who want Krabi’s limestone scenery without a different island tour every day. Stay three nights in Ao Nang, take one boat outing to Railay, and use another day for Krabi Town’s riverfront and time at your hotel. It assumes two adults arriving at Krabi Airport before 13:00 on day one and departing after 17:00 on day four. Keep days two and three interchangeable for the weather, and leave boats out of your departure day.

A proposed itinerary based on official tourism and property sources, not a firsthand review or live booking quote. Travel times are planning estimates. Suggested visit times are not opening hours. All times are local to Thailand.

3 NIGHTS · 4 DAYS

Your day-by-day route

DAY 01

Krabi Airport to Ao Nang

  1. 01Assuming arrival before 13:00, collect your bags and use a pre-booked vehicle or official transport counter. Allow roughly 40–60 minutes for the drive to Ao Nang.
  2. 02Aim to check in around 15:00, subject to your hotel’s policy. Check the actual walking route to the beach, including slopes and road crossings.
  3. 03Take a short late-afternoon walk along Ao Nang Beach and locate the Railay boat information counter. Ask about the next day’s operation, return-ticket conditions and boarding point for the way back.
  4. 04Eat in Ao Nang and rest. Treat sunset as a weather-dependent bonus and do not plan a late-night boat transfer.

Skip the walk if arrival is late. Booking a Railay hotel adds a boat leg, so these airport-transfer assumptions would no longer apply.

DAY 02

Railay West and Phra Nang

  1. 01Around 08:30–09:00, confirm the day’s Ao Nang service and your return arrangements. Treat roughly 15–25 minutes as an estimate for the crossing itself, with extra time for loading and any wait for passengers.
  2. 02At Railay West, enjoy the beach and cliffs, then follow open pedestrian paths toward Railay East and Phra Nang Beach. This route excludes the rope-assisted viewpoint and lagoon climbs.
  3. 03Have lunch on Railay. If it is very hot, skip one beach and rest in shade. Swim only when local conditions and guidance allow, and travel with light luggage.
  4. 04Aim to return around 14:00–15:00. Wait early at the boarding point specified for your ticket and follow any request from the operator to return sooner.

Fares and final departures are deliberately not treated as fixed. Confirm the operator, beach and validity of your return ticket, and avoid relying on the last boat. Beach boarding can involve wet feet.

DAY 03

A Krabi Town riverfront morning

  1. 01Leave by vehicle around 09:00 for Krabi Town. It is a separate area from Ao Nang; allow roughly 30–45 minutes and arrange the return as well.
  2. 02Explore the riverfront around Chao Fa Pier and the black crab sculpture, looking toward Khao Khanap Nam. This plan does not include a boat excursion into the caves across the river.
  3. 03Have a simple town lunch and return to Ao Nang around 13:00–14:00. The route does not require staying until evening for a night market.
  4. 04Spend the afternoon at your hotel pool or in your room, followed by dinner in Ao Nang. Swap this day with the Railay outing if yesterday’s sea conditions were unsuitable.

If boats are cancelled on both days, leave Railay for another trip. Use one day for the hotel and indoor meals, and reduce riverfront walking in heavy rain.

DAY 04

A road transfer on departure day

  1. 01Have breakfast, pack and check out. Do not add an island trip or a distant hot spring or viewpoint.
  2. 02For an international departure after 17:00, aim to leave the hotel around 12:30–13:00. Leave earlier if road conditions or airline guidance require it.
  3. 03Aim to reach the airport about three hours before an international flight, allowing for pickup delays. For domestic flights, follow the relevant airline’s check-in requirements.
  4. 04For a connection in Bangkok or elsewhere, check the airport codes and baggage arrangements. With separate tickets, verify delay protection and baggage recheck requirements separately.

Phuket and Krabi are different airports. If your flight uses HKT, the short airport transfers and budget assumptions in this guide do not apply.

PLAN WITH A REASON

Why this route works

Railay needs a boat connection

Railay is a beach area on a mainland peninsula, even though the outing can sound like an island trip. You cannot simply drive from an Ao Nang hotel to the beach entrance. Prepare for boarding and possible splashes, with waterproof storage for valuables. If a companion has reduced mobility, ask what boarding assistance is available; stay with an Ao Nang-based plan if it is unsuitable.

Ao Nang is the base; Railay is the day out

Keeping your luggage in Ao Nang avoids a hotel-transfer problem if boats are cancelled and preserves a road journey to the airport. Whether your hotel is beachfront or uphill changes the daily walking effort. Check the route from your room to the street, lifts and gradients before choosing on the strength of a view photograph.

Hong Island or Phi Phi needs its own day

Replace the entire land day if you want another island tour. Check pickup time, national park fee inclusions, meals and weather-cancellation terms, and add a separate budget. A short Railay return crossing is not priced like a full-day island tour. This route uses one boat day to leave flexibility for weather and fatigue; daily boat tours would be a different style of trip.

Breakfast before the boat outing

Pano Café · Breakfast when staying at Avani

Avani lists this breakfast venue on its official dining page. If staying there, compare an inclusive rate with paying separately. If staying elsewhere, breakfast at your own hotel is usually simpler than making a special trip.
