Follow the river instead of crossing the whole city.
Distances on a Bangkok map can hide traffic and complicated transfers. This route uses one base around Saphan Taksin and Sathorn for three nights, separating the Grand Palace and Wat Pho from Wat Arun and the riverside lanes. It suits two adults on a first visit who want temples, food and city views. Assume arrival at Suvarnabhumi Airport (BKK) by noon and departure after 18:00 on day four. If you use Don Mueang Airport, replace both airport journeys. Flights to and from Thailand are outside these four local days.

Your day-by-day route
Arrive, settle in and eat in Bang Rak
- 01Arrive at BKK by 12:00. Allow 60–90 minutes for immigration and baggage, then follow the airport's official transport instructions for a taxi or prebooked car.
- 02Budget 60–120 minutes for the drive, with extra time in heavy traffic. Confirm the meter or agreed fare, airport surcharge and tolls before leaving.
- 03Aim to reach your hotel around 15:00–16:00. If your room is not ready, leave your bags rather than squeezing in a major temple visit.
- 04Take a short late-afternoon walk near your hotel in Bang Rak or Charoen Krung, then have a nearby dinner and prepare suitable temple clothing.
For a late arrival, keep only the transfer and hotel check-in. If comparing the Airport Rail Link, include BTS connections and carrying luggage to the hotel.
The Grand Palace and Wat Pho
- 01Leave around 08:00, aiming to reach the Grand Palace at 08:30–09:00. This first leg assumes a car; leave earlier if traffic requires it.
- 02Allow about 2–2.5 hours for the Grand Palace and Temple of the Emerald Buddha. Follow official entrance, dress and access instructions.
- 03Have lunch before visiting Wat Pho for about 1–1.5 hours. If the heat is tiring, shorten the visit or substitute it for Wat Arun the next day.
- 04Return to your hotel around 14:30–15:30 for a break. Eat nearby in the evening instead of adding a Chinatown excursion.
The palace's published regular hours are 08:30–16:30, with ticket sales ending at 15:30. Ceremony notices and temporary closures override those hours; use official signs to find the entrance.
Wat Arun by boat, then a short lane walk
- 01After breakfast, head to Sathorn Pier. Check the day's tourist boat timetable, direction and ticket type for a service stopping at Wat Arun.
- 02Allow roughly one hour at Wat Arun in the morning. You do not need to climb every staircase; avoid slippery sections in rain.
- 03After lunch, take a suitable tourist boat toward Ratchawong Pier, then walk or use a short car ride toward Talat Noi. Choose one small area of riverside buildings, lanes and cafés.
- 04Aim to be back at your hotel around 15:00–16:00. In intense heat or if boat services stop, replace the walk with an indoor meal or café.
Tourist boats, express boats and cross-river ferries have different tickets and stops. One ticket does not cover every boat. Allow extra transport money if you switch to a car.
Leave a generous airport buffer
- 01Have breakfast and pack. Avoid ticketed sightseeing or a market trip before departure.
- 02For an international flight after 18:00, plan to leave around 11:30–12:00, earlier if road conditions warrant it.
- 03Allow at least two hours of road and congestion buffer, aiming to reach the airport three hours before an international departure.
- 04If using rail, include the journey to the station and every BTS / Airport Rail Link transfer. A Don Mueang departure needs a different route.
These are suggested planning times. Follow your airline's check-in deadlines and live traffic information; use spare time for a meal after reaching the airport.

Why this route works
Why stay near Saphan Taksin and Sathorn?
Access to both the BTS and boats helps on a river-focused trip. The word Sathorn does not mean a hotel is beside the pier: a Surasak hotel adds a train leg, while a west-bank hotel adds a river crossing. Check the route from the actual hotel entrance to your boarding point, rather than judging location from a river-view photo.
Prepare for the palace dress code
Check the official rules and avoid sleeveless, short or transparent clothing. Choose comfortable clothes that cover shoulders and legs; do not assume a shawl will solve every issue. Follow instructions about removing shoes and photography inside temple grounds.
Why no Ayutthaya or floating market?
An out-of-town trip would take away the afternoon breaks that make this route manageable. Splitting the three major temples over two days leaves time to appreciate them. If shopping matters more, replace a temple visit rather than adding another stop on top.
