Ayutthaya in 4 days: temple ruins and riverside evenings

From Bangkok to a quiet riverside afternoon

1. 01Leave your central Bangkok hotel around 09:00 by pre-booked vehicle. Allow roughly 1.5–2.5 hours depending on your starting point and traffic.
2. 02Leave your luggage at the hotel and eat nearby. Early room access is not guaranteed; ask where you can rest before check-in.
3. 03After your room is ready, rest and enjoy nearby river views. Do not assume the riverfront forms a continuous promenade; use a short route recommended by your hotel.
4. 04Dine at your hotel or a reserved riverside restaurant. If a temple view matters, confirm the seating location and availability in advance.

If starting immediately after landing, add immigration, baggage collection and the drive from your particular airport, then shorten day one. This itinerary starts in the city, not at an airport.

Wat Mahathat and Wat Ratchaburana in one area

1. 01Aim to visit Wat Mahathat around 08:30–09:00, after checking opening hours for your date. Explore the ruins as a whole rather than spending the entire visit at the famous Buddha head.
2. 02Continue to Wat Ratchaburana to see its prang and grounds. Respect closed stairways and interiors, and take care crossing the road between the sites.
3. 03Around 11:30, stop for noodles and a café break. Return to your hotel during the hottest part of the day instead of adding more ruins.
4. 04Later in the afternoon, take a short neighbourhood outing if you feel like it, then have dinner. Plan an evening illumination visit only when an official announcement covers your dates.

Bring clothing covering shoulders and knees. Do not climb statues or ruins, cross barriers for photographs or touch the tree roots.

The former royal palace area, then across the river

1. 01In the morning, combine Wat Phra Si Sanphet with adjacent Viharn Phra Mongkhon Bophit. Notice the contrast between the ruined stupas and a living place of worship.
2. 02Rest at your hotel after lunch. If you prefer a museum, check Chao Sam Phraya National Museum’s opening days and replace one morning visit with it.
3. 03Around 15:30, take a vehicle to Wat Chaiwatthanaram with the return arranged. It lies across the river southwest of the historic island; apparent proximity on a map does not make it a convenient walk.
4. 04Finish before the posted closing time and return to your hotel. Do not assume entry continues through sunset or illumination hours; book dinner after your planned return.

Return to Bangkok after breakfast

1. 01Have breakfast, check out and collect your luggage. If buying roti sai mai, check a nearby shop’s hours and storage advice.
2. 02Plan to leave around 10:30–11:00 for central Bangkok by reserved vehicle. Allow roughly 1.5–2.5 hours or longer in heavy traffic.
3. 03On arrival, continue to your Bangkok hotel or onward plan. Leave room for luggage and lunch rather than another temple stop.
4. 04If flying out the same day, calculate the separate airport journey and your airline’s check-in requirements. Arrival in central Bangkok is not arrival at the airport.

To travel by rail, rebuild the plan around the exact departure station, train, seat type, timetable and transfer from Ayutthaya station to your hotel. The budget below assumes road transfers.
